 Hackers New Target!

By GEOFFREY A. FOWLER And BEN WORTHEN

"Recent hacking attacks on Sony Corp. and Lockheed Martin Corp. grabbed headlines. What happened at City Newsstand Inc. last year did not.   Unbeknownst to owner Joe Angelastri, cyber thieves planted a software program on the cash registers at his two Chicago-area magazine shops that sent customer credit-card numbers to Russia. MasterCard Inc. demanded an investigation, at Mr. Angelastri's expense, and the whole ordeal left him out about $22,000.

His experience highlights a growing threat to small businesses. Hackers are expanding their sights beyond multinationals to include any business that stores data in electronic form. Small companies, which are making the leap to computerized systems and digital records, have now become hackers' main target..."

 The Flooding in Thailand
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today the New York Times has a lengthy article describing the impact of the unprecedented and widespread flooding in Thailand on the disk drive industry.  I've already received a couple of inquiries about this and how it will affect computer supplies.  This should be of great concern to everyone, because disk drives are found not only in computers, but also in DVRs, high-end printers, video cameras, and many other electronic systems.  Already, some system manufacturers have had to slow or halt production of some products.  And the extent of the flooding is so severe that it will be many months, if not years, before production again reaches pre-flood levels.  We have seen the prices of some drives double and triple.  And that's a price that really has no meaning - because there is zero availabilty nationwide.  So this could have a serious global economic impact that everyone needs to be aware of.
The only good news is that several weeks ago, as soon as the damage was first reported, we stocked up with a three to four month supply of desktop PC drives.  So for the time being, we can still integrate and supply systems.  We are carefully allocating our supply of drives, and are not accepting any large orders at this time.  But if you are a client of ours, and need a new or replacement PC, we will be able to accomodate you.  Of course, as time goes on and the situation changes, we will keep you informed.
HP: We're keeping the PC unit
By Larry Dignan | October 27, 2011, 1:07pm PDT
Summary: HP CEO Meg Whitman decides the PC business isn’t so bad after all.
Updated throughout: HP said it will keep its personal systems group and that it will continue to sell PCs.
The company added that its strategic review indicated that the supply chain and procurement hit was too much. Meanwhile, HP’s PC unit performs well.
When Meg Whitman took over as CEO she promised a quick decision on the PC division. She delivered.
Overall, HP’s move makes sense—at least in the short term. Keeping the PC unit removes a lot of uncertainty for corporate technology buyers who were likely to go with vendors such as Lenovo and Dell. By eliminating that uncertainty, HP can move ahead.
HP’s PC unit is profitable, but analysts noted that the business has imploded. In other words, HP couldn’t sell the PC division and a spin-off wouldn’t have been a boon to shareholders in its current state.
INTERNET VULNERABILITY
Hackers break SSL encryption used by millions of sites
Beware of BEAST decrypting secret PayPal cookies
"The most important thing is that the ones who discovered or "created" the hack, is an academic hack, meaning they wanted to point out it can be done, not that it is being done.  Also, to have it really be successful, they need to be running on the server also, the most likely culprit would be 3rd party scripts running on a banking site, like ads; and if they were already “compromised” this hack is really moot, they would have far more information than this.
The hack has been known since 2006, but was considered "theoretical" until now, so with this discovery of scripting that can accomplish this means we will see some upgrades and patches coming sooner."  -Gary Smith (Sr. Technical & Sales Engineer, CR&T)
